Agaricus — genus of fungi of family Agaricaceae.

Etymology

Agaricus, m, Agaric, Mushroom. From ἀγαρικόν (agarikon), a type of wood fungi [Saccardo, P.A. Sylloge Fungorum V: 993 (1887)]. Also, according to Pliny and Galen, the name originates from the locality Agaria in Sarmatia, from where larch polypore was allegedly exported to Greece and Rome.
