Fruit body

Annual, sessile, prostrate-reflexed, occasionally subprostrate, solitary or imbricated with 2-3 caps, sometimes fused into rosettes, half-lobed, fan-shaped, elongated tongue-shaped, with a stalk-shaped narrowed base, smooth or with a wavy margin, up to 10-15 cm in greatest dimension and up to 1-3 cm thick, soft-lipped when fresh, brittle and fragile when dry, very light after water loss. The cap surface ranges from rough to nearly naked, furrowed and uneven, unclearly zonal, radially wrinkled, fibrous, appressed-woolly toward the base, sometimes tufty pubescent along the margin; the color is red-orange, brick-colored, rusty-brown in old age. The edge of the fruiting body is thin, fringed, whitish-yellowish, and at the end the same color as the surface of the cap.

The tubules are single-layered, thin-walled, and 2-5 mm long. The surface of the hymenophore is the same color as the basidioma (darker deeper in the tubules). The pores are initially rounded-angular, later becoming irregular, unequal in size, sinuous, irpex-shaped, with torn, sharply serrated edges, averaging 1-2 per 1 mm, sometimes merging and then becoming larger.

Flesh

Light, fibrous-spongy, fragile, unclearly zonal, saturated with moisture when fresh, the same color as the surface of the cap or slightly lighter, turns red under the influence of alkalis.

Odor

Strong, mushroomy.

Microscopy

The spore powder is white. The spores are cylindrical or narrowly ellipsoid. They are smooth, colorless in bulk, thin-walled, and non-amyloid, 6–12(–15) ​​× 2.5–4 µm, with a well-defined apiculus. The spores are acyanophilic and indestrinoid.

Ecology and distribution

It has a circumpolar Holarctic distribution, primarily in the boreal and mountainous zones of the Northern Hemisphere, but is rare everywhere else. It is typical of nearly natural or minimally disturbed forests with numerous fallen trunks in various stages of decomposition. It often serves as a bioindicator of particularly valuable ecosystems. It frequently develops on trees decomposed by the margined polypore (Fomitopsis pinicola). It causes brown cubic rot of conifers and some deciduous trees.

It's not of culinary interest, but there's no definitive data on its edibility. Some tinder fungi can be poisonous.

Status 3. Rare species, considered near threatened.

Limiting factors: logging of old-growth forests and clearing of deadwood.

Similar species

Easily identified by its relatively thin, red-orange fruiting bodies with large, serrated pores. Specimens with prostrate fruiting bodies may resemble the basidiomycetes of Pycnoporellus alboluteus, which is primarily found in a prostrate form (rarely forming cap-like limbs) and has a characteristic hymenophore structure with long, deeply dissected tubes, open at the margins, often tuberculate or stepped. The somewhat similar Tyromyces kmetii, which grows on deciduous wood, has lighter, non-rusty-yellow fruiting bodies that are slightly gelatinous, with small pores and light-colored tissue.
