Genus: Ganoderma
Ganoderma — genus of fungi of family Polyporaceae.
Etymology
Ganoderma, Ganoderma. From γάνος, εος (ganos, eos) n, shine, luster + δέρμα, τος (derma, tos) n, skin [Saccardo, P.A. Sylloge Fungorum XXI: 294 (1912)].
Type species
Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst., Revue mycol., Toulouse 3(no. 9): 17 (1881)
Notes
Until recently genus Ganoderma was placed in its own family Ganodermataceae. At present (2018-11-07) this position is still recorded in databases Index Fungorum and MycoBank. Research conducted in 2017 showed that separating distinct taxon Ganodermataceae from family Polyporaceae would lead to further avalanche-like division of this family into various taxa (independent families) based on rather questionable characteristics [1].
