Etymology
Hapalopilus, Hapalopilus. From απαλός (apalos), tender, soft + πίλος (pilos) m, felt, hat (felt or woolen).

Description
Basidiomata annual, resupinate, resupinate-reflexed or sessile. Upper surface of caps, if present, covered with cuticle. Tissue soft, somewhat fibrous, water-soaked, upon drying hard and brittle, usually brightly colored in lemon-yellow, rusty-yellow, orange, orange-red, red-ochre colors, changing color to raspberry, violet or lilac under influence of alkalis.
Hyphal system monomitic. Hyphae thick- and thin-walled, with clamp connections, colorless or encrusted with crystalloids, changing color under influence of alkalis.
Basidia small, clavate. Spores ellipsoid to ellipsoid-cylindrical, thin-walled, hyaline or slightly colored, smooth, non-amyloid. Cystidia absent.
