Family: Phanerochaetaceae

Phanerochaetaceae - family of fungi within order Polyporales.

Family Phanerochaetaceae was first described by Swedish mycologist John Eriksson in 1958 as subfamily Phanerochaetoideae of family Corticiaceae. Later it was officially published by Erast Parmasto in 1986, and in 1982 Swiss mycologist Walter Jülich elevated it to family status. Type genus — Phanerochaete.

In 2007 Karl-Henrik Larsson proposed to use name Phanerochaetaceae for designation of clade of corticioid fungi grouped around Phanerochaete. In 2013 more extensive molecular analysis showed that Phanerochaetaceae are subclade of large phlebioid clade, which also includes representatives of families Meruliaceae and Irpicaceae. Generic boundaries of Phanerochaete were revised in 2015, and in 2016 new genera were added.

Fungi of Phanerochaetaceae cause white rot.
