Etymology
Hypholoma, Hypholoma. From υφή (yphē) f, web, tissue + λομα, τος (loma, tos) n, fringed edge.
Description
Fruit bodies thin-fleshy.
Cap usually expanded, 3—10 cm in diameter, bright, from orange-yellow to brick-red, less frequently brownish, dry or slimy, often watery.
Partial veil thin, cobwebby, upon disappearing leaving floccose fibers hanging along cap edge.
Gills adnate, brownish-violet, brownish-olive or purplish-brown.
Stem central, solid or hollow inside, without ring.
Grows in forests, usually in groups on stumps or near them, on fallen wood, less frequently on living trees and on soil.
Genus contains poisonous species. Many fungi from this genus have bitter taste.
