Etymology
Cortinarius - cortina (Latin) veil, curtain, with terminal element -arius, meaning property or affiliation.
Cortinarius is one of the largest genera in the Agaricaceae order. Different authors give different numbers of species in the genus, usually up to 700, but according to the most comprehensive publication, the Dictionary of Fungi, the number of species exceeds 2,000.
